Recently, a colleague decided to leave our company after a decade. The reason was all too familiar: an insensitive manager. In moments like these, we're reminded of the crucial balance between professional expectations and human empathy. 🕊️
As many of you know, I am a fervent advocate for human-centered leadership. The story of my colleague—a motivated professional navigating personal loss, only to be met with indifference from leadership—strikes a chord. This mirrors an experience I faced 16 years ago, underscoring that despite advances in our understanding of emotional intelligence (EQ) and its impact on performance, we still encounter leaders who fail to embrace it. 🧠💔
My keynote speech, "Hard Work Got You Here, Heart Work Gets You Further," touches on this very issue. The evidence is clear: EQ in leadership not only supports individuals through challenging times but also drives better business outcomes. Yet, the presence of leaders lacking this empathy remains a stark reality.
We must ask ourselves, how can we foster a more compassionate leadership style in our environments? How can we ensure that our workplaces are not just about results but also about supporting each other, especially during personal crises?
I hope that none of you ever have to endure such a lack of empathy in your professional lives. More so, I hope that we can all be the change by embodying the emotional intelligence we wish to see in our leaders.
PS: Let's strive for a future where companies are led by emotionally intelligent individuals. Because, at the end of the day, heart work truly gets you further. 💖
