I used to think my work would speak for itself. I was wrong.

Early in my career, I learned about the PIE principle:

• Performance matters, but it’s not everything.

• Image shapes how others perceive you.

• Exposure is key to getting noticed.

I ignored the “E” for years, thinking my results alone would earn recognition. My boss gave me plenty of opportunities to present, but I saw them as chores.

Then, in 2019, I joined Toastmasters. I started to enjoy public speaking and embraced visibility as a skill. Six months later, I got promoted.

Hard work is important, but if no one sees it, it won’t get you where you want to go.

Are you using the PIE principle in your career?

Which letter do you need to focus on? Let me know in the comments
