The more interesting the content, the more I forget the person in front of me.

A client came in with a plan B, months of reflection behind it. I could see other options. We tested them, compared them, poked at the logic.

Good questions. Smart conversation. All at the cognitive level.

What I missed: the plan was there for security. And security is felt before it is planned. I never asked what it was like to need a plan B in the first place.

That is my pattern. When the content is interesting, I follow the content.

Next time, one question to go down a level: "What does this plan protect you from?"

When did you last realise you had talked about everything except the feeling underneath?
